AR Gives Color And Shape To Classical Music Through a Snapchat Lens
The new augmented reality lens, “Colors of Music,” will allow Snapchat users to watch a visual representation of the notes played by an instrument in real time.
The Royal Philharmonic Orchestra (RPO) has partnered with Snapchat for a new augmented reality (AR) tool that will help music lovers “explore sound through a visual medium“.
The Colors of Music is an AR lens that displays a 3D representation of notes played live by an instrument, translating them into colors and shapes. Users can access the lens in the Snapchat app and scan live instruments – at a concert, for example – to see the reproduced notes in real time.
The lens is already available on Snapchat, having been launched on January 26 with a live concert by three cellists performing classical repertoire behind a transparent AR mirror for a live audience at the Southbank Centre, London.
The RPO conducts annual audience research, and the 2024 survey found that 34% of adults believe social media platforms play a key role in discovering new music genres or even artists. This new AR project is part of the orchestra’s commitment to exploring new ways for its audiences to interact with the live music experience.
“People love to use Snapchat to message their closest friends and family and to feel engaged with their topics of interest – from fashion to sports to music,” said Ben Wymer, director of global brand experience at Snapchat. “We’re excited to partner with the prestigious Royal Philharmonic Orchestra to see how this AR experience creates new ways for Snapchatters to enjoy live music.”
“Whether you’re learning to play a stringed instrument and sharing progress updates with your friends, or you’re a pro sharing a new song with your fans, the lens sparks the imagination like never before. It’s as simple as scanning an instrument through Snapchat.”
“We’re delighted to be working with Snap Inc on this exciting new project,” said Huw Davies, Deputy Director General of the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra. “At a time when many orchestral music enthusiasts are supplementing the concert experience by delving deeper into discovering their music online, this pioneering new experience from Snap Inc will go a long way to inspiring music discovery journeys for people at home, at college or during a music lesson.”
