“The Castle of Prince Bluebeard, the only opera composed by B. BARTÓK, based on a libretto by Balázs Béla, is a disturbing tale with an ending that departs from Charles Perrault’s story, abandoning the happy ending proposed by the French writer and ending on a tragic note, highlighting the conflict between the desire for knowledge and its dangerous consequences. In essence, the story focuses on the dialogue between Bluebeard, a mysterious nobleman, and Judith, his fourth wife, who becomes obsessed with the secrets of his castle. Judith gradually discovers the seven closed doors of the castle, each opening revealing dark moments from Bluebeard’s past. The tension builds as Judith realizes the truth about her husband’s violent nature and the fate of his ex-wives.
We will discover Bartók’s musical vision on Friday, March 7, 2025, as performed by the Banatul Timisoara Philharmonic Symphony Orchestra, mezzo-soprano Atala Schöck and baritone Istvan Kovacs in a concert conducted by Maestro Gabriel Bebeșelea.
