Social media: opportunity or threat for classical music?
Social media platforms have become indispensable tools in the promotion of classical music, but not without raising some questions.
“Social media platforms are tools you have to use, regardless of your opinion on social media,” says Zsoldos David. He recognizes both the advantages and disadvantages of these platforms: “They are of course a threat, social media has many disadvantages, but we don’t have the luxury not to use these tools. Society as a whole uses these tools on a daily basis, so if you don’t create content for social media platforms, all the other content will replace it.”
Smart use of social media can help expand audiences and attract younger generations to classical music. “They need to be used intelligently, to know what to use each platform for and how to use it,” advises Zsoldos. However, he warns that these platforms “are not here to improve society and music classical music, they are there to make as much profit as possible.”
The challenge is balancing the need for visibility with maintaining artistic integrity. Musicians and cultural institutions must navigate this complex digital landscape, finding ways to use social media to benefit classical music without compromising its core values.
