Jacob Collier and Chris Thile With The Britten Sinfonia: A Unique Classical Fusion
On January 23, 2025, Grammy Award-winning musicians Jacob Collier and Chris Thile performed with the Britten Sinfonia at the Barbican Centre, marking a significant moment in Collier’s career as he made his orchestral debut in the UK. The collaboration bridged the worlds of contemporary music and classical performance, offering a fresh perspective on both.
Under the baton of Suzie Collier, Jacob’s mother and a former teacher at the Royal Academy of Music, the 50-member Britten Sinfonia accompanied the two soloists in a program that combined orchestral works with innovative symphonic arrangements of Collier and Thile’s own compositions.
The performance included a variety of music, from Piazzolla’s Four Seasons of Buenos Aires and Anna Meredith’s Nautilus to Bach’s Concerto for Two Violins and Samuel Barber’s Violin Concerto, in which Thile substituted his mandolin for the violin part. The evening also featured Bach solo works by Thile and Collier’s complex vocal performances, including a rendition of Fauré’s Pie Jesu. Collier’s Audience Choir, an interactive piece in which the audience sings along, also made an appearance, demonstrating Collier’s ability to blend orchestral and popular music traditions.
While the symphonic arrangements were impressive, it was the impromptu interplay between Collier and Thile that captivated the audience. The two moved seamlessly from one style to the next, from ragtime to country western harmonies, and even incorporated an impromptu fusion of Bach, The Beatles and Bob Dylan. The performance showcased the duo’s talent and their ability to connect with both the orchestra and the audience.
This concert was not only a celebration of the talents of the two musicians, but also an exploration of the evolving nature of classical music in the 21st century, with an emphasis on creative collaboration and the blending of genres. For classical music audiences, it provided an exciting insight into how contemporary musicians are reshaping the classical concert experience.
