20 Jan 2025

Maestro Cristian Măcelaru, one of the most appreciated contemporary Romanian conductors, has achieved a remarkable international recognition thanks to the release of the album “George Enescu: Symphonies 1-3 ~ Romanian Rhapsodies 1 & 2“, recorded with the prestigious Orchestre National de France and released under the aegis of Deutsche Grammophon. This impressive achievement has been recognized by winning the International Classical Music Awards (ICMA) 2025 in the “Symphonic Music” category, an accolade considered the equivalent of the Oscars in the classical music industry.

The album, released in 2024, includes the two Romanian rhapsodies and the first three symphonies by composer George Enescu, rediscovered in a performance full of depth and authenticity. This monumental project has been realized in partnership with the Radio France Choir, conducted by Aurore Tillac, and was recorded at the Auditorium Radio France in Paris, a venue renowned for its impeccable acoustics.

Cristian Măcelaru has meticulously collaborated on this album, using the original manuscripts of Enescu’s scores to reveal the nuances and subtleties of the great Romanian composer’s creations. According to the ICMA jury, this exceptional work has made the album “a real discovery, both in terms of the works and their interpretation“. The master conductor has always been a promoter of Romanian music internationally, and in this project he has passionately dedicated himself to restoring the prestige of composer George Enescu on the global musical map.

In addition to the ICMA award, the album has previously been honored with two other prestigious awards:

  1. Classica Choc de l’année 2024;
  2. Diapason d’Or 2024 in the “Symphonic Music” category. International music critics have bestowed this prestigious award, appreciating both the quality of the interpretation and the artistic realization of the album. The “Diapason d’Or” is a rare award for the best recordings of classical music, and this album was considered a model of excellence in orchestral music.

The Romanian conductor emphasized the importance of this project in a recent interview:

“I’m glad that these recordings continue to receive great attention. For me, this album is a gift to the whole world, a gesture through which I wish to show the depth and beauty of Enescu’s music.”

The International Classical Music Awards Gala will take place on March 19, 2025, at the Tonhalle in Düsseldorf, an event at which Cristian Măcelaru will have the opportunity to bring Enescu’s genius to the forefront once again through a festive concert.

The ICMA Award marks a first for Romanian classical music, as it is the first time that a Romanian conductor has won this distinction in the “Symphonic Music” category. It also highlights the importance of collaboration between Romanian artists and major international music institutions.

The success of this project is not only a personal victory for Maestro Cristian Măcelaru, but also a celebration of Romania’s cultural heritage, demonstrating that Enescu’s music continues to inspire and move audiences around the world.
